Built at the northern end of the island in 408 BC; the town stretches from the hills of Monte Smith all the way to the Medieval City, to Mandraki port and on to the beaches beyond – just a few miles to the east.
Rhodes is considered one of the best planned cities designed by Hippodamus, with a checkerboard road network, much of which has survived until the current day. Its unique makeup is based mainly on the extensive architectural projects constructed by the Knights of St John and later by the Italians.
Today, Rhodes town is the second most highly populated town in the Greek islands. Second only to Heraklion in Crete and in spite of its tourist development its unique identity has remained untouched.
